My Top 5 Party Hostels In South America

loki mancora

For many travelers visiting one of the world’s most amazing party hostels is an inevitable activity and for some, it will be remembered as an undeniable highlight of their once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Whether you’re wanting to let your hair down to escape the weeks of non-stop site seeing or simply in need of a few nights of craziness, there’s always a place along the tourist trail to satisfy even the deepest of partying desires.

For me, a few nights of insanity turned into a good year and half of jumping from one party hostel to another in search of nothing other than good times and an unlimited supply of socialising. My experience gave me more than one year of working/partying in some of South America’s most notorious party hostels, so with that I give you my top 5…

#5 – Loki Hostel, Cusco

Total time spent at hostel: One month

Situated at the top of a very challenging hill and with around 200 beds this place is massive! No matter what time of the day an assortment of thumping music can be heard blaring from hostel’s sizeable bar which transforms from a hungover backpacker hangout by day to a crazy alcohol haven by night. With a good restaurant menu this hostel also accommodates for the hungry backpacker, a decent meal being no more than $5USD.

Food: 7/10
Atmosphere: 8/10
Party: 8/10
Dorm Beds: 7/10
Value for money: 9/10

#4 – Media Luna hostel, Cartagena

Total time spent at hostel: 5 days

This old colonial building has a very unique vibe and it’s party scene is highly dependent on the kind of people at the hostel. Afternoon drinking sessions by the hostel’s dipping pool got fairly out of control, but it seemed like the only way to escape the sometimes intolerable Caribbean heat. The sunny patio is very much the main attraction during the day, however at night time the action is at the roof top bar and terrace with cold drinks and an awesome view over the city. Be sure not to miss the Media Luna Mega Party every Wednesday!

Food: 8/10 Restaurant at the front of the hostel
Atmosphere: 8/10
Party: 8/10
Dorm beds: 8/10
Value for money: 8/10

#3 – Wild Rover, La Paz
wild rover
Total time spent at hostel: 3 days

The Wild Rover hostel chain is notorious for it’s parties and the first ever Wild Rover in La Paz certainly doesn’t disappoint. This hostel is themed around a traditional Irish pub and with a customer review rating of 8.8/10 on hostelworld.com this hostel has become a must visit if you’re in the partying mood. If you can manage to find the bar area free of raging alcoholics it’s also a pretty awesome place to have a meal and in my opinion the food is slightly better than Wild Rover’s competition Loki, La Paz.

Food: 8/10
Atmosphere: 8/10
Party: 8/10 (Jun-August)
Dorm beds: 9/10
Value for money: 8/10

#2 – Loki, La Paz

Total time spent at hostel: 4 months

Although it’s a great place to party, admittedly I did stay a little too long. Built into an old hotel, Loki La Paz has 7 levels with the bar being at the very top. The busiest times of year for this place will generally be from June until the end of August with the majority of the crowd being rowdy groups of Chileans. The only problem I had was that the drinks prices are a little expensive for a country as cheap as Bolivia.

Food: 7/10
Atmosphere: 7/10
Party: 10/10 (Jun-August)
Dorm beds: 7/10
Value for money: 7/10

This hostel was voted in the top 10 hostel bar views in the world and it’s not hard to see why…

1# – Loki, Mancora

Total time spent at this hostel: 3 months

Hands down the best party hostel I have every stayed at. Yes, another place I did overstay my welcome, however if you’ve ever been there you’d understand why.

This resort style hostel, although equipped with an amazing pool, is placed mere metres from Mancora’s beach. To be completely honest, it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing beach I’ve ever seen, but it IS a beach none-the-less. During the months of January through to the end of March this place is at its peak of madness so, prior to arrival, be sure to be feeling fairly fresh and prepare yourself for pretty much anything…seriously anything.

Food: 8/10
Atmosphere: 10/10
Party: 10/10 (Jan-March)
Dorm beds: 8/10
Value for money: 9/10

Honorable mentions – Wild Rover – Cusco, Loki – Lima
